How to avoid SPAM, and take advantage of quality Marketing Messages.

Spam texts are a modern problem, pestering us with unwanted adverts and offers, often from dodgy companies. Yet it is possible to fight back, report them and minimise the amount you receive.

First of all it is important to classify what sort of message it is that you have received. A 'Legitimate marketing message' will include the senders name and contact details. These are the sort of messages that you have given permission to be sent, although perhaps unknowingly. The firm will identify itself either in the contact section, or within the body of the message. If you wish to stop receiving these messages from the company, firstly don't reply, and if you continue to receive them, get in contact with the company. However, these types of messages CAN be useful to you, they will normally be offering you something which could be beneficial to you.

The second type of message you may receive is a 'Premium Message', again, you have agreed to these messages, however you may have been unaware that by buying a ringtone or service on your phone, that you would receive regular, charged text messages. To stop these types of messages, the message will usually prompt you to reply 'STOP' to a certain number, which you will most likely be charged for also.

Now onto the dreaded 'SPAM message' These are usually messaging randomly generated numbers, advertising services like accident chasers, PPI claims handlers, debt write-off companies and more. They usually come from an 11 digit number, and the company will be identified. Do not reply to these sort of text messages - ever! They are trying to obtain your personal details, and normally come from  computers and are sent to masses of randomly generated numbers. They use multiple pay-as-you-go Sim cards which will often only be active for a week or two.

There are many ways that you can minimise your chances of receiving these pesky messages:

  • Be careful who you give your mobile number to. Well filling in your details for companies, only give your mobile number if absolutely necessary
  • Ensure your mobile number is not listed anywhere online. Including social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or any forums - even if you think they are private
  • Always read the small print. Unfortunately, this is where you will need to look to find any privacy policies and marketing opt-out information
Follow these steps to ensure you only receive the RIGHT type of marketing message. Text message is a great way for businesses to communicate with their customers, as long as the customer is genuinely interested in what they have to say. That's why at SMS club, we connect businesses and customers who have a shared interest in keeping up to date on what is going on.
